THE WATER PARAMETERS THAT SHAPE THE ICE
The quality of an ice rink does not depend solely on its refrigeration system. The water used to form the initial ice sheet and for subsequent resurfacing becomes part of the surface itself, influencing its clarity, uniformity, strength and glide.
During freezing, mineral salts, organic matter, impurities and dissolved gases can become unevenly distributed within the crystal structure, creating microbubbles, cloudiness and inconsistencies. Water quality is therefore assessed using precise parameters: TDS indicate the total concentration of dissolved substances, conductivity reflects the ionic load, hardness primarily measures the presence of calcium and magnesium, while pH describes the chemical balance of the water and helps assess its tendency to form deposits or become corrosive.
TAILORED TREATMENT FOR EVERY RINK
Fulcor analyses the available water and specifies the most suitable treatment according to the system and its intended sporting use. The objective is not simply to produce the purest water possible, but to bring the relevant parameters within stable, controlled ranges. Where necessary, reverse osmosis reduces the mineral and ionic load, providing a consistent and repeatable basis for ice formation and resurfacing.
Correctly treated water helps produce more uniform, transparent and predictable ice, with the balance between glide and mechanical strength calibrated to the intended sporting use. It can also simplify resurfacing, limit deposit formation and reduce the need for corrective work. In properly configured systems, optimised water management can also help reduce the refrigeration load and operating costs.

FILTRATION THAT PROTECTS THE IRRIGATION SYSTEM
In sports facilities, uniform irrigation also depends on the quality of the water supplied to the network. Recovered water may contain soil, sand, rust, plant debris and other suspended particles that can wear pumps, interfere with valve operation and progressively restrict the flow through nozzles and sprinkler heads.
For a sports field in Lugano, Fulcor installed a CINTROPUR mechanical filter. An internal vane creates a centrifugal flow: heavier particles are separated from the water and collected at the bottom of the filter bowl, while the filter sleeve retains finer solids. The filtration rating is selected according to the flow rate, particle load and the size of the passages within the components being protected. The transparent bowl allows sediment build-up to be checked visually, while the bottom valve enables it to be drained.

UV DISINFECTION COMPLETES THE TREATMENT
In this installation, mechanical filtration was combined with a UV-C system for the microbiological control of recovered water. Pre-filtration is a fundamental stage: by removing particles that could absorb or shield the radiation, it allows ultraviolet light to reach microorganisms more effectively. UV-C radiation damages their genetic material and prevents replication, without adding chemicals or altering the mineral composition of the water.
The effectiveness of disinfection depends on the correct relationship between flow rate and UV dose, the water’s UV transmittance, the cleanliness of the quartz sleeve and the output of the lamp. Fulcor therefore sizes the system according to the water source, suspended-solids load, available pressure and required flow rate. The filter sleeve, filter bowl, quartz sleeve and UV lamp must also be inspected and maintained at intervals suited to the operating conditions.
Combining these two treatment stages protects pumps, valves and delivery points, helps maintain a stable flow rate and promotes uniform water distribution across the playing surface. However, mechanical filtration does not remove dissolved salts, hardness or dissolved contaminants. Where analysis identifies additional issues, Fulcor integrates the necessary treatment stages.

TARGETED HYGIENE IN SPORTS CHANGING ROOMS
In the changing rooms of swimming pools and sports facilities, humidity and high footfall make hygiene in circulation areas particularly important. Fulcor installs foot hygiene stations with timed spray activation and controlled dosing of an antifungal solution. The system ensures uniform mixing, limits consumption and waste, and directs the water correctly towards the dedicated drain. The number and layout of the stations are determined according to the available space, access flows and the specific requirements of the facility.
